Madlock slid hard into Fernandez and the shortstop fell behind the base and broke his elbow when he hit a wooden strip that separates the dirt from the turf in the cutout around the base; Fernandez left game and DH Madlock left for a pinch-hitter the next time he was due up since he was hit in the chest by a knee
