Notes & reviews

  • Start of game delayed 15 minutes because of rain
  • Dean out for running into own batted ball
  • Simmons tossed his bat and argued briefly with home plate umpire Summers about the third strike
  • Simmons orginally stayed in the game, playing LF, with West shifting to CF, replacing Outlaw. Boston manager Stengel also replaced Warstler with Huber at 2B. Simmons made many gestures for the benefit of the bleacher fans to express his view of the called third strike against him in the top half of the inning. Umpire Stewart saw this and ejected Simmons. Stengel put West back in LF, West back in CF, and Warstler back at 2B which brought an argument from Cubs manager Hartnett, who eventually relented and let the Bees revert to their starting lineup (except for the new battery).
