after lead-off hitter Orlando Palmeiro was called out on strikes and dropped his bat at the plate, HP umpire Tim Tschida thought it was an act of defiance and ejected Palmeiro; however, Angels hitting coach Rod Carew had instructed his starting lineup to each use the same bat, so Palmeiro was simply leaving the bat behind for Gary DiSarcina; after DiSarcina and manager Terry Collins convinced Tschida that Palmeiro was not trying to show him up, the umpire rescinded the ejection
