As the St. Louis players ran off the field, a United States marshal waited for CF Compton in front of the St. Louis dugout to serve him with injunction papers which would prevent him from playing for St. Louis (Compton had jumped from the Kansas City American Association team to the Federal League St. Louis Terriers earlier in the day). HP umpire Brennan ordered the marshal off the field and Compton continued to play in the game.
SLF CF Compton left the game (and ballpark) early so the US marshal could not serve him with the injunction papers.
