- catcher Bill Sarni stood on the mound talking to Paul LaPalme as the Cardinals tried to stall; HP umpire Jocko Conlan went to the mound to break up the discussion and talked to the two players; Cardinals manager Harry Walker went onto the field angry that Conlan had hurried his players; Reds manager Birdie Tebbetts went to HP upset that the Cardinals were stalling; he stepped around Conlan and swung at Walker, who wrestled Tebbetts to the ground; both benches cleared and multiple skirmishes broke out; Tebbetts suffered cuts and was bleeding around his mouth; Sarni, Tebbetts and Walker ejected by Conlan
