suspended,19200904,NYC14,resumed protest $Wrightstone hit a popup to shallow left field that either SS Bancroft or LF Burns could easily have caught and HP umpire Harrison called 'infield fly'. Each fielder thought the other would catch it and the popup fell safely to the ground. Runner on 2B Stengel ran to 3B and runner on 1B Fletcher ran to 2B. Burns picked up ball and threw to 2bman Doyle who stepped on 2B. Base umpire McCormick did not hear 'infield fly' and called Fletcher out on a force out at 2B. The Phillies argued vociferously but the umpires stuck with their ruling of an inning-ending double-play since Wrightstone was automatically out on the infield fly ruling and Fletcher was forced out at 2B. The Phillies argued this ruling for several minutes arguing that the infield fly ruling removes the force on Fletcher. The umpires did not change their minds and eventually the game continued. Fletcher was ejected during the argument and Philadelphia announced that they were playing the game under protest. The game finished with New York winning 6-0. A few days later the NL president upheld the protest and ordered the game to be replayed from the point of the protest with two outs in top of 7th with Stengel on 3B and Fletcher on 2B (Fletcher's ejection was rescinded). The game was replayed/resumed on September 4.
