- Over RF fence While chasing the drive, Rice ran head first into the fence and was knocked unconscious. He was picked up by several of the Washington players and carried out into the field where he received emergency treatment. He sustained a bad cut on the top of his head and retired to the club house where his injuries were dressed by a physician summoned from the stands. Players who examined the fence where Rice fell claimed that his head struck a nail that was protruding from the boards.
